Elecraft K3 Assembly Front Panel – Day 7

As assembly continues on the Elecraft K3 today was time to finish the back connectors and the start on the front panel – I was trying a new camera and camera position so let me say up front I’m not happy with the video but overall it will give you the view of the assembly process I was going though.

The interesting and challenging part about this is there are several places where someone that is as anal as I am about getting things lined up and cleaned properly will go crazy on this section. Getting the knobs to line up perfectly on the lines and indicators is for me very challenging. Knowing that I wanted to get this part right the first time and knowing that it’s the thing you will be looking at everyday is critical to me ☺ I know maybe not to everyone but it is to me.

Also – having fingerprints on the plastic covering the main readout window was something I didn’t think about at the time but once I got it mounted I had to take it off and clean – again something that is import to me that might not be to most.

The great part about this step for me was really seeing what you are going to be viewing while operating is really exciting. There are a few steps here that you want to take your time on like setting the screws on the faceplate properly as it will be a critical step later and ensuring that you have the alanscrews untighten before trying to assemble the knobs on…. Very critical. Getting the VFO’s mounted and ensuring that you don’t have any leads sticking out too far is another place to be careful here.

A few gotta areas but overall another fun section of the build – enjoy the video and remember it’s not my best for sure!

Elecraft K3 Build Assembly Day 6

Elecraft K3 Build Assembly Day 6

And so it starts – Elecraft K3 World Famous Build – I really expected the radio to not take it’s form so quickly for some reason my expectation was that it would take much longer for it to actually look like a radio.

I was really humbled my the pour out from people that I got on my refection’s email regarding the type of feedback I was getting from others on this build. I really do love this Ham Radio community it has been part of my life for a long time and will continue to be with all the great feedback I have gotten.

So mounting boards, 2D Connectors properly (which is something I recommend you get right the first time) and then pulling together the head shield and sides was the big part of this section. I had to slow down because I had the Auto Antenna Tunner and I wanted to make sure I read about getting this part right for a few reasons. The first being it’s a little off topic from the main book and the second was I heard the antenna tuner is so good I could tune a paperclip with it so I knew I wanted it to work right the first time ☺

When the sides come together it’s really a blast – I mean that because you know there is a long way to go but you now see the form of the radio, the back is filling in with SO259’s and other connectors… you are seeing what could be and that is a great feeling. I can’t wait to get this radio together now and it gave me an extra boost of energy to continue working. These are small parts at times and frustrating could set in if you drop and keep dropping small washers. Your eyes could get tired over a little time and of course other priorities in life come up ☺

This was my stopping point for today just as it seemed like a natural break for me personally… I hope you enjoy the video.

Elecraft K3 Build – Parts Separation and Day 1 Build (Page 5)

Elecraft K3 Build – Parts separation and Day 1 Build

So I will say upfront this is not the most exciting part of the build – I will say that I was not feeling 100% while working on this section so I didn’t get as far as I wanted and I also found that it’s pretty stressful trying to build, read, get things right and be on video ☺

First recommendation of this build is get yourself some sort of project box. I went a little overboard with the Kobalt box and you certainly don’t need something this elaborate but I intend on using it for other projects. Anti static mat and wrist band are both clearly needed.

From my experience there are a lot of parts packages and I have read from some that the best idea is to unpack them all at once. I found that there are several that aren’t needed at first so I unpacked as needed. The Misc bag is the one I started with due to the amount of screws, bolts, washer and so on. I found that even though this is a very tedious part of the built I think it’s critical to get everything separated early so you’re not digging around later.

The next part of this that I will tell you is getting the 2D stands put on the right way is very important as I put one on wrong and had to take quite a bit apart to get the outside case working. I will show you this in my next video but I’m not done editing it at this point.

Enjoy the video and this part of the build as I said it’s not the most exciting part but it’s something that is needed and once you get it done you will be much happier as you build.

Ground Zero, NYC Tower 1 and 4 Visit

Ground Zero – YouTube.

In my job I get chances to visit a lot of places and normally as many of you know you don’t get much free time to enjoy the city your staying in. You also don’t get a chance that often to visit hallowed grounds which is something that again isn’t something you have time for.

Growing up in Connecticut I of course have a connection to the city and of course I lived in Connecticut during 911. I have visited the Trade Center’s a few times and worked at Lehman Brothers across the street so I got to see them inside and out many times.

When I ‘m visiting a city I always do some research on BBQ, Photography Opportunities, Ham Radio and of course historical landmarks. I would never say I have stood there and herd voices but when I get a chance to visit it is a great place to reflect on this is the place that the Wright Brothers first flew or the battle field where Washington Cross the Delaware. Whatever it is I like to of course photograph it but take it in… these are places that for us could be once in a life time and you have to treat it that way. Yes, as I have gotten older I have gotten much more reflective but heck why not. We have a great country and some amazing history which we need to spend more time teaching our next generation about. Well, before I get on a soapbox about teaching our kids more than video games, Facebook and texing….

I remember the day perfectly as I was sitting in my office in Farmigton CT and one of the people I work with was listening to Howard Stern on the radio when she said that a small plane crashed into the World Trade Center… well that is where the day started and you know where it ended. I’m not going to go too far into my story but I want you all to remember yours.

My trip was the first time I was at the new memorial – it won’t be the last and I don’t know much more that I could tell you about it in this post other than to let you see it through my own lens. It was a special day for me visiting and watching Tower 1 and 4 be built and seeing those waterfalls with all the names – people tracing out the names of their loves ones and people crying….. it was a special day that I will not forget either for a long time.

I picked the song because it’s not too political but tells a story I think we can all relate too…. Thank you Alan Jackson.

Icom ID-51 (ID-51A) First Quick Review

Here is a quick side by side comparison of the ID-51 Icom Dstar Radio next to it’s predecessor ID-31a as well as a surprise appearance from the 92-ad. I am very happy with the ID-51 at this point and really like the programing as well as the other features it has. The size is just a little bigger than the ID-31a and in my opinion worth the extra price. I want to do a more indepth review with some deeper audio testing as well as side by side programming options. I have found a few things it does better than the 31a in programming ability and I wanted to point those out.

This video was done with a Canon 5D Mark II for those that would like to know and the internal microphone only was used as my external mic’s battery was dead. I will get a new 9V for the audio testing of course as I want to make sure it’s a valid and as scientific test as possible.

As always I would love your feedback on the video and don’t forget to like and subscribe it to help me out. I will be happy to test or post something specific if there are questions but at this time I’m going off of the simple things I had time for this morning. I had to go rake leaves and clean the driveway so my time was limited. Also I had heard the UPS truck and was hoping it could be my new Elecraft K3 which I can’t wait to build!!!

Please give me ideas and I will ensure to get to them!!! Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog and keep coming back!

Sony Rolls Out Early Firefox OS ROM For Xperia E

Sony Rolls Out Early Firefox OS ROM For Xperia E | NextPowerUp.

I played with some of the new Sony Hardware in the Sony Store and of course they make great hardware and have a great experience overall with their products. My wonder if when do we become saturated with too many phones and OS’s for the public to be able to consume.

This is not to stifle competition of course – not my point – my point is with a Firefox Phone, Ubuntu Phone, Apple iOS, Windows Phone, Android and of course rumors of a Amazon Kindle Phone and Facebook Phone do developers stop developing their apps for all these phones?

Of course I’m sure Twitter, Facebook and the large app developers will continue since they are branding apps for Xbox, Apple TV, Ruku and many other devices because their business is their content I just wonder when the consumer gets overwhelmed.

Maybe the challenge isn’t the phone or the OS they just become irrelevant… maybe it’s just the fact that the phone is free or cheap and it has all the apps I need. I mean they are getting to the point where phones will clones and commodities and whatever has my apps and is free when it’s time to upgrade is where the public will go.

Now that my rant if over of course I’ll be interested to see if there is something serious to separate this phone or is it just another iphone clone.

Video: I used Google Glass | The Verge

So you want to see the Google Glass Glasses in use? You have been waiting for a few of them or a cool demo? Wait no further here you go:

Video: I used Google Glass | The Verge.

Here is Google’s offical demo page:

http://www.google.com/glass/start/

I watched it today and I’m still holding out my opinion until of course I play with them myself to see what the functionality is as well as the cool factor which every technology gets rated on. There are several applications that do make sense like a Dr doing surgery looking at vital signs, school buss driver making sure kids are not around the buss before they take off… many many more.

For not – you could be in m camp and a person that has now seen them in a video being used in a few senerios and take the wait and see. If your really creative you could be part of the beta program and get a pair today. Go to Google’s site listed above and follow the directions on how to signed up for a free pair of Google Glasses and get started beta testing.

Meet Surface with Windows 8 Pro by Microsoft – First video ad.

Sounds of Sand Key – YouTube

Sounds of Sand Key – YouTube.

One of my photography goals this year was do to more videography. Yes, I know it’s not photography it is a different genre completely.

I was out doing some long exposure photography at Sand Key Beach State Park in Clearwater and decided since I was there I would take some time and shoot some video. I was surprised on how much fun I was having at the time and how easy I got into doing it. Sometimes shooting video could be boring because your doing small shots of simple things and putting them all together later. Because this was the ocean and waves it was relaxing and enjoyable. There was a Sea Shell that you will see in this video I was lucky enough to capture that was rolling in and out with the tide and it was beautiful.

I don’t know about you but the more I listen to the ocean the more calm I get. My wife and I talked about it on our cruise and she lived on the ocean when we met. You really don’t understand the impact of the sounds until you spend time listening and losing yourself in it.

The video isn’t perfect as I put it together quickly and I haven’t done any editing on color or exposure so it’s simply compression and transcode. I hope your enjoy!

All shot with Canon 5d Mark III if you would like to know more about the camera and lens combination:

Trace Adkins – Tough People Do (Live at RNC)

In life timing is everything for opportunities – I found out at the last minute that there were two tickets available for Trace Adkins live show at the RNC event in Tampa, FL. Well, my wife Val and I had been avoiding all week going anywhere near the convention center area because we had heard it was going to be crazy. At the last minute when these tickets came available I said to her let’s go…. how many times do you get to go to and Event Like this…DNC or RNC and as some of you know and if you don’t you do now… Even though I grew up on Rap and Rock Music in Connecticut and still do love most of it. At a really low time of my life I had heard a Trace Adkins Song (I want to feel something) that really make me sit up and take attention.

Now – I have seen Trace at the Tampa Bay Ray’s Game and at the Strawberry Festival in Lakeland, FL but for some reason this night felt different and it wasn’t until this song that I knew it (Tough People Do). We just happened to be in the front row for this concert and I was taking pictures with a small camera and decided for some reason to turn on Video and here is what I caught:

I thought the song was awesome and really time appropriate – we are in tough times in this country and I hope that tough people making tough decisions help make this a better place! Trace’s performance was amazing – young and old he brought down the house and Val and I ended up being so glad we stayed for the whole time. Security was tight all around the city and we had no issues whats so ever anywhere at anytime. As a matter of fact we were so surprised on how little protesting we saw….

Thanks for the night Trace, the new song and all the classics we remembered from before… the night was one I will not soon forget and keep the music going…
