Mel’s Hotdogs Review – Tampa, FL
Well, I do review a lot of BBQ restaurants but one thing I truly love is a good ole fashion hot dog! Especially a Chili Cheese dog!!!
So Mel’s is always rated as one of the best places in Tampa to eat including top hot dog place in Tampa. The history is quite steep at Mel’s since 1973 it’s been a landmark. http://www.melshotdogs.com/melshistory.htm
Mel’s has a retro feel inside which is somewhat built to feel that way and not an original retro… more of an era corrected update in my opinion. Now there is nothing wrong with that but when you have the desire for something built upon history I expect a little more than just pictures and paintings on walls.
Back to the food which is the real reason I was there – once sitting through the line that was quite long and rightfully so with all I have read about Mel’s.
My order was simple and that is all I was looking to do is try their world famous dogs….
Chili Cheese Dog, Fries and a cold beer! Boy America is a great place! 🙂
Mel’s lived up to expectations – great bun on this Chicago dog and it was a crisp snap to the tasty dog. Chili was well spiced and not over spiced – great amount of cheese and the fries are just cooked fresh. I don’t know what else to say other than the price was a little steep. I think it was $8 for a dog and fries which I thought was a little expensive but you find that in these historic places 🙂
Mel’s has limited parking so make sure you think about that if your heading over. You have to park on the side road or wait for a spot to open which isn’t a huge deal but something to think about. If I was rating this against another institution in Tampa – Frankies I might say to skip the drive over to Mel’s and stay in South Tampa for a foot long at Frankies. You will just have to wait for my review 🙂
