Since purchasing the Sony NEX-5 and then the NEX-7 I have been really impressed with what Sony has been doing in the micro camera space – the challenge is always their Alpha Series has been something I stayed away from due to the fact I’m a Canon Shooter first and I have a lot of glass already invested in their platform…. and I’m really happy with my 5D3, 5D2 and 1DIV… GREAT Cameras, results and have made me a nice amount of money.
Why would I be playing with Sony’s new Flagship products – well first of all I believe my wife would tell you I have to have a new camera a month and while that might be part of the truth I did say earlier that I was impress with their direction as well as being disappointed with Canon’s pricing and lack of some features in the 5d3 that I believe are basic these days (WIFI & GPS come to mind – the A99 doesn’t have WIFI but it does GPS Tagging.) Ok – you get the picture I’m a gear collector as well as snob I think that’s pretty clear. I had a chance to pickup an A55/77 and several lens package about a year ago and it was too good of a deal to pass up. I haven’t played with the A55 as much as the 77 and I really loved that camera. The Speed – the screen and all the little things were great. It felt great in my hands which is odd since I have very large hands and the battery grip trigger isn’t as high as others. I didn’t think I was going to like it but I did.
So – the A99 arrived and didn’t look that much different than the A77 but let’s play….. Results I was getting were really great…. the lens quality I own on the Sony’s is not near as good as my Canon L lens but the picture quality was really close. The test I still wanted to do and haven’t yet is 5d3 vs a99 side by side on low light high ISO. I have read that the A99 performance is about one stop less … if you don’t know what that means think the Canon in a low light children’s play or event your $3500 Canon will be one Fstop better… ok maybe you don’t know what that means but there will be a little less digital noise or sparkles on your 5d3 vs your a99. Hope that helps 🙂
I took a ride around Tampa and figured I would wait for some good light to see what I could come up with. The Sony really saturated the colors well, having built in GPS really saves me a ton of time and the 24MegaPixal Full Frame Senor really allows me to capture large view that would also be great to crop down into smaller pictures without losing quality. We will talk about that in another post Full Frame vs Crop Sensor.
There are many things in this camera for the Techno Geek like myself as well:
- On-Sensor Phase Detection
- 24MP 36x24mm CMOS Sensor
- Dual AF (auto focus) systems that provides focus tracking and precession.
- There is a Quick Navi nob on the front for easy setting updates.
- Silent Control Dial for Video Shooting
- EVF and articulated rear screen
- Uncompressed Video Output
I could keep going on the geek stuff but I will tell you other than wifi Sony really crammed a lot into this Camera…. It’s not cheap for the average consumer… For sure. But I would ask you when you keep buying point and shoot cameras and then try upgrading for $1000 and are still unhappy you should take a step back and say to yourself. For all the money I am spending on new iphone, ipad, camera, video cameras and so on while don’t I sit back and invest in a great camera that is going to last me 10 years. The combination of Photo and Video capabilities will ensure for a long time you are on par with whatever else it on the market. If you don’t have a large investment in lens now consider the A99… Price Performance you will be really pleased in my opinion.
You could purchase the camera from many places but of course if you use this link below to purchase from Amazon I will get a small commission from Amazon – no product I recommend will be more expensive than any of their listed prices so you could buy with confidence.
